The Masked Monkeys

Early Monthly Segments is happy to host the Toronto leg of Anja Dornieden and Juan David González Monroy’s Fall 2016 Canadian tour. Working together since 2010 under the moniker OJOBOCA, they have collaborated on over a dozen films and live performances, many of them made with the resources gleaned from the artist-run 16mm film lab Labor Berlin. The evening includes The Masked Monkeys, a film edited in part during their Goethe Insititut-LIFT Residency in 2014, and two live dual screen projections.

The Masked Monkeys is a surreal documentary about monkeys in Java who are trained to perform in the streets. The documentary is shot in beautiful, detailed black and white and overlaid with OJOBOCA’s signature trenchant voice-over.

Their two dual screen 16mm projections mimic an early 20th century “feeling machine” nicknamed the Traumatoscope, a machine designed by Dr. D. Forme “to replace the faulty mechanism of human emotion”. OJOBOCA adapt this machine into an expansion of their on-going interest in Horrorism, a simulated method for inner and outer transformation.

Not for the faint of heart!
