Roberto Ariganello

Early Monthly Segments presents a special evening of 16mm films by the late Roberto Ariganello (1961-2006) on the 10th anniversary of his sudden passing. We will remember Roberto at an intimate screening in his former apartment on College and Dufferin. Even if you only met Roberto once, it’s guaranteed that his warmth, exuberance and passion for filmmaking has stayed with you ever since. The energies he shared with filmmakers and film lovers in Toronto and beyond resonates ten years after he left us much too soon.

Roberto finished five 16mm films between 1995 and 2001 (his video “Gesture” will be playing on a loop during tonight’s event) and his body of work is intensely personal, humourous, playful and probing of personal/collective/political histories. Loteria, made with Federico Hidalgo, is a documentary of the children responsible for drawing winning lottery numbers in Mexico. Shot on vivid colour and B&W Super 8 and 16mm, it’s a visceral portrait of Mexico in the mid-1990s. Yesterday’s Wine is a film constructed from regular 8 and Super 8 films and language tapes exploring the violence so common in commercial filmmaking. Shelter is a layered optically printed film that juxtaposes a street demonstration during a TIFF gala with archival scenes of bomb shelters, circuses and westerns. Roberto made two animated films in collaboration with his close friend Chris Gehman. Their first, Non-Zymase Pentathalon is a post- war re-visioning of North America as seen through the pages of LIFE, Maclean’s and National Geographic. Their second film Contrafacta is a delightful collage film described best in the words of Daniel Cockburn: “The horror of an incomprehensible world ruled by an unfathomable God is expressed through sublime cut out animation; medieval art moves to a creepy and funny soundtrack, inadvertently inventing a new genre: spiritual slapstick.”
